En Ooru, Wayanad – Tribal Heritage Village Guide
Plan your En Ooru Wayanad trip: entry fee, opening hours, online ticket booking, and things to do at Kerala's first tribal heritage village.
What Is En Ooru?
Perched on a misty hilltop in Pookode, Wayanad, En Ooru — Kerala's first tribal heritage village — offers visitors a close look at the daily life, art, and traditions of the region's indigenous communities. (The name is sometimes searched online as "Ennore Wayanad" — more on that in the FAQs below.) Spread across 25 acres on the slopes of Pookode Hill, the village recreates a traditional tribal settlement with mud-and-hay huts and artisan stalls, where visitors can watch craftspeople at work and learn about the Kurichya, Kuruma, and Kattunaykan communities who live in these forests. Private vehicles can't be driven up to the village — visitors park near the Pookode Veterinary College bus stop and take a short shuttle jeep ride for the final stretch.
About the En Ooru Project
Management and Purpose
En Ooru is managed by the En Ooru Charitable Society, chaired by the District Sub Collector, with 13 tribal leaders from the Vythiri and Pozhuthana panchayats on the committee. The project is jointly run by Kerala's Department of Tourism and the Scheduled Tribes Development Department, and directly or indirectly employs around 1,050 people from the local community. It was conceived to give visitors a low-impact way to experience tribal culture and rural life, away from the pace of the cities.
Project Phases and Similar Initiatives
The first phase, completed at a cost of around ₹3 crore, includes a tribal market, a tribal restaurant, and a felicitation centre. The ₹4.5 crore second phase adds tribal huts, an art museum, an amphitheatre, and a children's park with natural, traditional toys. Similar heritage projects elsewhere in India include Shilparamam in Hyderabad, the Muziris Heritage Project in Kodungallur (Kerala), Dakshinachitra in Chennai, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya in Bhopal, and the Auroville Project in Puducherry.
Best Time to Visit En Ooru
The best time to visit En Ooru is between October and February, when the weather is cool and pleasant. Avoid the monsoon months (June–August) — the village may close for safety in a mountainous, rain-heavy region — and be cautious about peak summer, since a visit involves a fair amount of walking that can be tiring for children. Weekends and public holidays tend to be crowded, so early arrival helps.
Tips for Visiting En Ooru
Private vehicles aren't permitted inside En Ooru — you'll park in the designated area and use the shuttle jeep service for the last stretch.
